Indoor herbs ignite outdoor plans

Aerogarden update

My Aerogardenâ„¢ is treating me to wonderful smells now. I’ve started pinching the plants back to make them fill out more, and I do believe that the basil is ready to report for duty next time I make some soup.

I love being able to grow things indoors. The only problem is that I’m getting a bad case of spring fever! I’ve been pouring over seed catalogs as if they were a bible of some sort, and I’ve decided what my balcony garden project is going to be this year. Kiwi! Yes, it is possible to grow kiwi in zone 5. In fact, there is a variety called Arctic Beauty from Russia that is hardy to zone 3! It is smooth-skinned and smaller than it’s fuzzy cousin, and I’ve heard them described as looking like huge grapes. I’m saving up for at least one male and one female plant. If I find a good deal, I’d like to get two females.

The male has gorgeous green, white and pink variegated foliage right off the bat, and the September Sun variety of the female will get that variegation over time. So I’m really excited about growing these. Do you have any plans for growing something new this year?
