Adventures in companion planting

Having only a balcony for gardening space is very challenging for an ambitious gardener like me. Normally I’d stuff the dickens out of every pot I have, but I’m being a little more conservative this year. The main reason is that I don’t want to deal with powdery mildew, which has plagued me many times when my pots are overcrowded.

The other important reason is that I splurged on some kiwi vines to grow this year, and I REALLY want them to come back next year, so I’m going to baby them as much as I can. Unfortunately, the male kiwi might need to be replaced. Luckily it’s covered under the guarantee by Raintree Nursery, so I have until September to call them in case the worst is true.

For companions, I picked some Lady Lavender to grow at the base of each plant. And since all the plants are new, I slipped in some Sugar Daddy peas in each pot to take advantage of the space until the weather really warms up and everything else fills out. Somehow, I have a feverfew volunteer in one of the pots. I’ve decided to let it get bigger and then relocate it to a home of it’s own.
