Adventures in companion planting

Having only a balcony for gardening space is very challenging for an ambitious gardener like me. Normally I’d stuff the dickens out of every pot I have, but I’m being a little more conservative this year. The main reason is that I don’t want to deal with powdery mildew, which has plagued me many times [...]

Starting a balcony compost system

I always wanted to have a compost system set up, but I didn’t think it was either possible or practical for an upstairs apartment. I keep searching for ideas, though, and eventually I found a great site called Balcony Compost. I followed the instructions for the Simple Style Composter, and here’s how things went: First, [...]

Getting my Green on

My balcony garden is just as eager as I am for the growing season. Behold, my immortal chives: I planted them from seed the first Spring I lived in my current apartment, about 9 years ago, and I haven’t touched them since, except to harvest and occasionally thin out. Good thing I love chives! — [...]

Indoor herbs ignite outdoor plans

My Aerogardenâ„¢ is treating me to wonderful smells now. I’ve started pinching the plants back to make them fill out more, and I do believe that the basil is ready to report for duty next time I make some soup. I love being able to grow things indoors. The only problem is that I’m getting [...]

The unforgivable paper invoice

A few months ago, the library got two copies of a rather… large invoice. Below is one of those copies. This is very easily half a ream of paper. You might be thinking that this must be one enormous bill! The amount that must be paid must be frightening! Well, it is frightening, but not [...]

Scratching the off-season gardening itch

I got an Aerogardenâ„¢ for Christmas. I’ve wanted one of these ever since they were invented! At last, now I can satisfy my gardening cravings year round! MUAHAHAHAHAA!!! *Ahem* Er… yes. It came with the basic herb kit. Everything sprouted except for the Italian basil, which I deemed a dud after three weeks of nothing. [...]
