Accountability Check #19

I’m tired of life pushing me around. I want to be the one pushing! How does one go about that, anyway? In the meantime, here’s proof I’ve been knitting! I finished the Allegra jacket! Unfortunately it doesn’t look that great on me. I will definitely make another in a better color, though. The Norfolk Ramblers [...]

Knitting Side to Side, Shoulder to Shoulder

(Score yourself 10 points if you started singing Zombie Jamboree after reading the title)
One of the newest knitting techniques I've learned recently is knitting a garment from side to side. I haven't knit clothes very much, and the main reason is that I am chronically clumsy when it comes to sewing the pieces together. What I love about this sweater, is that it is all one piece. It starts at the right cuff, knits up the sleeve, increases for the body, partially binds off for the left sleeve, and ends at the left cuff. The collar and trim are just picked up and knit, and there are only two seams to sew under the arms and down the sides. I don't know if it is this particular pattern (being the Allegra Jacket), or my delight at how easy it is to knit, but it also knits up faster than any other garment I've ever knit. I love the side to side construction, I've decided, and not just for the ease of fewer seams. It really opens up the door to new design ideas. If you've ever taken a painting class, you are often told to turn your picture and look at it upside down once in a while. This breaks you out of any ruts or routines, and opens your eyes to see new possibilities. I feel that sideways knitting designs offer the same kinds of possibilities. There are lots of side to side patterns available, and many of them are free. Click on the pictures below to be taken to these free patterns. Have you already knit garments this way? How did they turn out? I'd love to hear your stories in the comments!
